5.- Amazon boosts U.S. e-commerce.
The company closed the year with a strong performance, revitalizing its core business units, including e-commerce. With a renewed focus on improving delivery speed and expanding product options, Amazon increased both order frequency and Prime membership growth. The vacation season was “historic”, with sales volumes at an all-time high. Amazon outpaced the competition with 11.7% growth in U.S. e-commerce sales in 2023, 3.6 percentage points higher than total U.S. e-commerce sales. This marked the first year since 2019 that Amazon significantly outperformed the market. However, competitors still threaten Amazon’s ability to gain market share. Walmart and Instacart outperform Amazon in digital groceries, which could prevent the company from gaining market share in food and beverage and health/personal care/beauty. So far, Amazon has withstood competition from Temu and Shein, but these startups could slow future growth in categories such as apparel, footwear and accessories.
